El comando ping tiene su origen en los submarinos y sus sonares. Para
detectar si había algún obstáculo, enviaban una señal sonora. Si ésta
volvía, es que había algo. De hecho, podían calcular la distancia del
obstáculo mediante el tiempo que tardaba la señal en retornar (la onda
es emitida, choca contra alguna barrera que le impide seguir y regresa
debido al choque, informando de la posición del objeto contra el que ha
impactado).
